This lovely lady is the brave and pioneering investigative journalist Nellie Bly. Bly (born Elizabeth Cochran) began her career in journalism in the late nineteenth century by adopting a pen name and launching into a new kind of investigative journalism in which she championed the poor and disenfranchised. Defying sexism and poor opportunities for young women at every turn, Bly gained fame and recognition by her distinctly empathetic and critical writing style and her willingness to undergo intense undercover investigations in order to expose corruption and its effects on the nation’s underprivileged. Her biggest story was her first assignment for Joe Pulitzer’s the “New York World”, where she posed as a mad woman in a mental asylum in order to expose the horrendous conditions and cruelty the inmates suffered. As if her continued, life-long career of advocacy wasn’t enough, this incredible woman embarked on a world trip in 1889, in order to beat the record set by Jules verne’s Around the World in 80 Days, which she finally did, arriving back in New York City after 72 days. You wish you were this cool.

day 4

today was fun…  to begin with, my amp has fucked me.  i have an ampeg vl-503 that is just a killer amp: 3 channels, 50 watts and designed by lee jackson.  so what’s the deal?  it’s too loud for what i do now.  50 watts will blow the roof off top jimmy style.  i’m more 5-18 watts kind of guy now.  so, my idea is to trade it for something i can use.  here is where the fuck you part is…  i haven’t played it in years and, you guessed it, nothing…  the input jack is fucked.  so, i pull it apart.  i’m thinking i can just pull that jack out and solder in a new one…  wrong… it’s buried underneath a bunch of shit and it’s soldered for the bottom.  FUCK!  so, i have two choices: undo all that shit and pull out the board, or shove it all back in and be pissed off.  i chose the latter.  so, now i have to find someone to do the former… and no one works on these amps any more…  yeah, once again, all together… FUCK!

next up on the “let’s fuck with jake” list is my DAW.  i just upgraded my imac to the starship enterprise and migrated everything over.  took for fucking ever.  when i fired it up, ready for warp speed, i started getting all kinds of error messages.  all of my amp and cab simulator plugins don’t fucking play nice with the new spaceship.  i have to delete all of them…  yep… FUCK!  i got this amplitube deal as part of a package deal and it was pretty cool.  generic marshalls, fenders and such with some cool delays and reverbs and fuzzes.  i go to the site and they are all well that’s not supported any more, you will have to get something new.  FUCK THAT…  I’M NOT DROPPING $300 ON THE NEW ONE!!!!!  so, now, i have to re-amp and remix everything…  EVERYTHING!

well, what the fuck do i do now?  i know surf the web!  i’m surfing and i find a killer amp sim.  it’s called, get this, a dick head…  i shit you not:

absolutely perfect for a dick head like me.  i was all ready to sign the endorsement deal!  it’s got a marshallish vibe to the tone and, best of all, it’s free!!!!!  damn, i was happier than a puppy with two peters.  i go to hit the download button and, out of the corner of my eye, i see something that brings all the woop, woopin’, high fivin’, party party to a screeching halt…  it’s vst and i am au…  FUCKED AGAIN!!!!!  fortunately, i found 4 good amps including a pretty good plexi and a 60’s cab.  but, i mean come on, are you kidding me?  what a fucking day!

day 3

What’s it all really worth?

What are you worth?

i’ve got stocks and bonds and houses and cars… worthless

i’ve got a mickey mantle rookie card…cool… but worthless

i’ve got god and jesus and  allah and buddha… worthless

i’ve got you babe… really?… worthless

all i’ve got is a little voice inside my head that keeps

me up at night asking stupid questions

without answers

worthless… worthless… worthless

truth is that if i was snuffed tomorrow

the next day i’d be missed

a year later i’d be missed just to keep up appearances

five years… aw – you know who used to do that… what a shame

ten years… who? did he leave you any loot?

twenty years… fifty years… one hundred years… five hundred years… one thousand…  as if i really matter…

newton… isn’t that … a cookie?

day 2

well yesterday didn’t go as planned.  there are days when perfectly good gear just doesn’t work worth a shit.  i am slowly coming to grips with the fact that i need a new machine.  the cpu in this one was never meant to handle the strain that i put on it with my daw and all the plugins i use to make all my digital stuff sound analog.  funny ol world innit…  we used to have to physically do things to a room to enhance or remove reverb…  now i have a virtual room that’s built in a plugin.  it’s made of “virtual maple” and is about the size of my living room.  it’s sits on a “room” aux buss and i dial in how much or how little i want.  i don’t even have to hit my friends up for extra mics either…  there’s a plugin for that too.    things sure are different than the old 4 track tascam days.  hell, i even remember doing a recording in high school where i used two boom boxes as a multitrack.  now i just add another track…

anyway… yesterday wasn’t a complete loss.  i’ve got the solo and the tone down for kim a’s song together… i just can’t record it until i figure out this cpu issue.

this is the cover of “mother” that jack and i put together.  he did the guitars and the singing and i put in a cameo on the solo.

day 1

so, here we go again… day one… sort of.  through all of the writes and rewrites, stopping and starting… swearing i’d never play again…  i’m starting to get shit done:  10 songs written (more but these are the 10 i actually like), drum tracks done, bass tracks done and rhythm guitar done for 8 of the 10 songs.  i’ve got a title for the album and i have capn’ jack staring at me wondering why all the rum is gone.

last night i did some mixing for the cover band project i am doing with a friend of mine from highschool: jack hills.  neither of us can remember being friends in high school, but we have a lot of the same friends.  he posted a video on facebook of his cover of the pink floyd song “mother” and commented that i was playing along with it.  one thing led to another and we decided to record a proper version.  we jumped through some hoops to get it done - like jack recording vocals with the help of a barbie boom box as a monitor - but it ended up being a lot of fun.  so, we decided to record another and another.  i think we are up to 4 or 5 now.  any way,  i think i have a pretty good mix of this new song.  it’s from one of my favorite bands growing up:  thin lizzy.  no it’s not that song it’s the other…

i also tracked another cover that i am doing with another friend from high school: kim armstrong.  (ain’t facebook cool!) this one is a stevie nicks and the heartbreakers song *hint, hint* and i am stoked because this is one of my all time favorite songs.  the drums, bass and keyboards are done and i have one of three guitar tracks done.  then kim and i get to figure out how we are going to record the vocals.  ya see she lives in iowa and i live in pa.  hey, if it was easy, it wouldn’t be worth doing.  besides, i’ve heard her sing other songs and i can’t wait to hear her take on this song.

so, on the agenda for tonight…  guitar!  my favorite subject.  \m/

stupid jake lick

so, if you haven’t guessed, i am a guitar player.  tonight i am tracking lead guitar parts for a thin lizzy song.  i can’t play like gary moore, john sykes, scott gorham or snowy white so i have to make up my own shit to fill in before the verses.  moving on… i recorded a few takes and hit the play back.  i am figuring out what i can get away with in and out side the f# minor pentatonic, so each one was different… except for that fucking jake lick.  IT was in all five passes of both solos.  what is IT?  it”s it…  no, seriously IT is nothing more than lazyness. it happens when ever i am playing a scale pattern that doubles back on itself.  i rush and instead of picking each of the notes in the lick, i just play a legato hamer on thing that is just lame, lame, LAME.  what’s frustrating is that i can play them right.  i practice and have practiced them right for years.  but, when that red light is on, there it is… somewhere… everywhere… haunting me… that stupid jake lick.
